Description:

Has it ever happened that, while standing in a queue in supermarket check-out, you glance into carts of other people and wonder lazily why did they buy this or that, and why so much of it? Well, now you have chance to actually know for someone!

Take a supermarket receipt (you know, the printed list of things and prices that you have bought) and send it to your partner together with a detailed explanation: why did you buy each item on the list. The receipt should have at least 10 different items, and your explanation letter should be at least 2 letter/A4 sized pages long (the more the merrier, of course) - so that it would give some sort of insight to your shopping cart. Your receipt may be from a regular weekly/monthly stock-up, or a pre-party shopping, or a mix of both - just as you choose.

Some examples as to what you could explain:

  • Is it something that you try to always have in your pantry/fridge/cupboard, or an one-time buy? Or maybe it is something you always buy when a party is coming and never for your own family only? If it is something you always buy, it probably has a couple designated uses in your family - what would these be? ("I often buy these pre-cut fries for a party as I don't want to bother peeling and cutting potatoes for this many people, although for everyday meals I have a big bag of potatoes straight from a farmer sitting in my cellar.")
  • Why exactly this item? Did you decide by brand, price, some properties of the item, country of origin, or possibly several of them? ("I always buy whatever happens to be the cheapest of whole milk produced in one of those three local dairies", "This new kind of rather expensive cookies was on sale so I decided to give it a try"...)
  • Is it for a certain person or for everyone in your family? (Say, a can of dog food is probably for a dog only - but maybe you have two, each following a special diet, so better to mention how it is, right?)

Your items do not have to be food - it is just that you probably buy more food than non-food items on regular basis. Explaining your cartful of toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, tampons, socks, chewing toys, diapers, crayons, colouring books and batteries is acceptable, too.
