Not really a banana but the shape reminds me of one! Convert to inches! A newspaper sheet would work to draw pattern/shape on. Have you noticed how small the paper has gotten?? Wow! Anyway I digress! Haunt those fabric sales and find a lightweight piece! Make one! Add trim IF you want.

Do you think a serger is necessary for this pattern?

It doesn't seem to need one to me, but I bet that the serger helps with the tendency of the jersey to ravel. I bet a double seam would have the same effect of making it lie a little flatter and preventing fraying.

You really don't have to use jersey/t-shirt knit if you don't want! A serger is still on my anniversary list! What about a light weight cotton?
