Help make the world a library!

BookCrossing is the act of registering a book online (giving it a unique number) then releasing the book out into the wild for someone else to find. It's a great way to give books new life and brighten someone's day at the same time. If the finder makes a journal entry, you'll get an email and can follow the book's progress (and maybe see what future readers thought of the book). BookCrossing is free, fun, & international.

Whether you're an avid BookCrosser or just trying it for the first time, join this swap and share your BookCrossing experience with your partners.

You will be releasing a book on April 21, 2014, which is the first International BookCrossing Day. If you can't release a book on that day, it's okay if you're a day or two early or late with the release, as long as you send your swap on time.

Send an email to your swap partner with the following info:

  • The link to the URL of the book you released on the BookCrossing website. Example: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/12145392/
  • Where you got the book you released
  • Why you decided to release this particular book
  • Where you left the book
  • Your experience leaving it (were you nervous? brave? seen by anyone? did someone pick the book up?)

You may take a photo of your release and upload it to the journal entry on BookCrossing, but please do not send it or anything else as an attachment in your email, as per group rules.

Some tips from an avid BookCrosser:

  • Read this: How to BookCross
  • Not willing to part with any of your "permanent collection" of books? No sweat. Pick up a copy of a book cheap at a library used book sale or used book store. If you choose a book you've already read and own, you won't be tempted to keep it!
  • Print out and tape a label (or use sticky labels) or carefully handwrite instructions in the front cover of the book along with the book's new BCID from BookCrossing.
  • Put a sticky note/post-it note on the front cover to let people know the book is free and not lost!
  • Pick a safe spot to release your book. Safe spots are places where lots of people could see it, where it won't get thrown away (a bench right next to a trash can is a bad spot), and where it won't get wet & damaged in bad weather (you can put your book in a ziplock baggie if you're worried it might rain).
  • Contact KateKintail or comment below with any questions!

Swap is open to all group members in good standing.

@Atropos I'm always happy to host more BookCrossing swaps (labels, holiday gift-giving, mini release challenge, themed release challenge, keep them moving book exchanges, etc.). I thought I'd start out slowly with this one. Let me know if you have any ideas/requests for future swaps!
