Description:

I love celebrating May Day, May 1st, with my children. We make cone baskets filled with goodies for our friends and family.

For this swap, you will fill a small cone basket with goodies...stickers, beads, buttons, paper flowers, candies, chocolates...anything with a SPRING Theme. $5 total. Make your cone basket pretty and decorated with a spring theme.

All swappers need to have a 4 or higher rating. Those who are newbies need to have a profile filled out. I will be checking and banning those who don't meet the criteria. We want this to be a fun and lovely swap~

International swap.

Instructions for making your very own May Flower Cone Basket:

  1. On the heavy paper, draw a circle 14 inches in diameter. Make a mark at the top of the circle. Next, use a ruler to measure a 12-inch line from that mark to the edge of the circle; make a second mark there. Do the same on the other side of the circle so you have three marks, spaced equally around the circle?s circumference.

  2. Next, draw straight lines from all three marks into the center and cut along those lines to create three pie slices. Take one slice and trace it onto the wrong side of a piece of the decorative outer paper, adding a half inch extra on all sides. Cut out the decorative paper shape.

  3. Glue the heavy inner paper shape onto the wrong side of the decorative outer paper. Along the rounded edge, snip the decorative paper border every half inch. Fold these flaps onto the inner paper and glue. Fold the straight sides onto the inner paper and glue.

  4. Now roll the paper into a cone, overlapping the edges 1 1/2 inches at the top, and glue. Add trim at the top, staple ribbon handles to the cone, and they're ready to be filled with treats.

Tips: These directions make three paper cones.

There's supposed to be a link for making paper cones there, right? ;) I found one this morning: http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/mayholidays/l/blmaydcn.htm

I love this idea. Maybe I'll steal it for my own family and friends! :D

I put the link, but it didn't come out. I just posted the instructions for the cones.

a nice idea also for a random act of kindness during spring is when you fill these with flowers and anonymously slip one on a neighbors door:)

This is a great idea! I have a question though and I know there isn't anything such as a stupid question, but I may have found the one stupid question to ask. This basket is made from paper - granted heavy paper but still paper. How do you ship it without it taking an enormous box of airy packing (which still wouldn't guarantee it) without it getting munched? Especially internationally? Anyone have an idea of how to ship this without ending up with a crunched May Day? Or it costing a ton internationally because of needing a really big box? I know I must be missing something here, hence my sureness I have found the one stupid question.

my question would be how to ship it without stuff falling out in the box...

I have been practicing, just gently wrap it up and it should be okay. YOu can change the pattern to have it covered. As for shipping Internationally, I had not thought of it in that those terms....I have free shipping since I use my Husband's work to ship from. Another reason I marked the swap April 16th, to allow time for international shipping. I have tons to learn still...

Use seran wrap and put it in your cone then fill the cone.Once you have done that take the seran wrap that is peaking out the top of the cone gather it togather and put a rubber band around it.It will hold all the goodies inside.

Excellent Idea! Thank you for that tip!

my paper is 12' by 12' is that ok for the cone

Queenbee 03/29/2007 #
