I will add a graphic in a few days,and I love earthy tones,or reds/red designs

Very cute idea! I am going to use mine to make couch pillows!!!

I love colors!!! Some of my favorites: jewel tones, earth tones, and any bright color mixed with a rich brown: lime green and brown, yellow and brown, pink and brown, orange and brown, turquoise and brown, bright blue and brown, etc.

Be wild and wacky with it!! :)

This will be my first swap and I am very excited to be part of it!

This time of year, I look forward to all the spring colors and spring flowers -- yellows, pinks, greens, lavenders -- in truth, I love color and flowers so you can't go wrong with me if you go with "happy" colors and/or prints.

Is the 10 1/2 " size unfinished? That is when we send it to our partners it will be 10 1/2" -- and then when combined with other blocks (after the trade) it will be 10" (because of seam allowances?). If that is the case, what size squares of fabric should we start with?

If I'm doing the math correctly (and I might not be), then to finish at 10", would be 10/3 or 3.33" + .5" for seam allowances which would be 3.83" squares to start with.

Or did you mean for the blocks to finish at 10.5" meaning the blocks would be 11" when we send them to our partners. Then we would start with 4" squares, which would be easier.

scrapkween 02/16/2009 #

each square should be 3.5 x 3.5 that should equal to 10.5, and be 10 when you sew it together.

missychrissy 02/17/2009 #

This is very confusing: don't think you've taken the seam allowance into consideration. 3 squares measuring 3.5" = 10.5". There is 1/4" seam allowance when sewing them together, this brings it to 9.5". When the block is finished it will be 9.5" square - then when they are sewn to other blocks with 1/4" allowance, the finished blocks will be 9".

well, Im sorry hince the emphasis on beginner swap......lol, as i am a beginner and the whole seam allowance thing confuses me. The finished square should be 10.5, so it will be a 10 inch square when sewn so I guess each square should be 4 inches. Thanks for clearing that up :-) I think I got that right sorry for the confusion.

missychrissy 02/19/2009 #

That's OK, I'm a beginner too and it confuses the hell out of me! Still doesn't add up though - don't think it's possible to get a 10" square with 9 patches... if they are 4" each the block will be 11" unfinished, 10.5" when sewn to other blocks.

ladydy5 02/22/2009 #

You all just confused me enought not to sign up

Craftlover10101 02/23/2009 #

yep me too ladydy5 cause i'm a beginner too when it comes to the seam allowences lol I just wing it with most. Now I have to try a 9 block square and see what I come out with. lol If anyone figures it out email me and than I'll join lol.

TC 02/24/2009 #

If you cut 4" squares - after piecing them together with 1/4" seams, you will have a block that measures 11".

When it is sewn to other blocks or sashing, it will measure 10.5".

I think it's important to get the block size down so that if we are adding theses blocks to quilts in progress(as I will be), they will fit. My color faves are purple and forest green, jewel tones or red, golds and greens which ever you have in your stash.

I will just colors I don't want are neon/bright colors. All others are fair game for me. My favorite color is yellow. Love color combo of yellow, orange, and brown. But doesn't have to be.

I like it all

Just want to point out that you are supposed to send TWO blocks to each partner. Somehow I missed that part, and I'm not the only one. :(
