Description:

It's been a while since I've seen or participated in a naked mail swap, so let's do it.

Naked mail means you send something without it being in a box, envelope or mailing bag. The USPS will aim to get it to you if you have an address label.

In the past, I've received a teapot (that I still use!), a package of decorative brads and a three-gallon bucket (yes, a bucket!) through naked mail swaps. And I've sent everything from a Frisbee and flip-flops to a dustpan. The counter clerks at my post office always get a kick out of what goes out and what comes back.

So look at your partner's profile to see what may be of interest to your partner. Then select and mail a naked item. This is an item, not a nake postcard.

Let's aim to keep a price cap of $5.

This is a U.S. only swap, but I highly encourage swappers in other countries to try it too.

The fine print: Newbies welcome with completed profile. 4.8 or higher rating with no 1s or 3s in the last three months for rated players. I review the sign-ups before assigning partners.

Questions? Please post them below.

Have fun and thanks for considering this swap.

Hi! just wondering for the naked mail swap- would you.. put the address labels on the actual item or?.. sorry it will be my first time doing this :]! but it sounds really cool!

twobluecrows 01/28/2010 #

I sent a little rubber piggy bank once, and used the sales tag/label to put my stamps and mailing label--they just fit! Other times I wrote the address on the back of a wooden goat, and tapes it onto a long flyswatter!

As long as the post office can see it, and it's securely fastened, anything goes.

Twobluecrows has the right of it. The postage and address label has to fit somewhere and be visible.

And LOL at the naked mail flyswatter.

Oooh thanks! :] Oh wow i can't wait !! to do this then!

Goodwill or salvation army finds would be great things to send naked :]

moowee 01/28/2010 #

I have sent plastic toys. You can make an address lable that sticks out like a flag for the address if there is not room on the item.

WestMichiganGuy 01/28/2010 #

So do tell me on how safe is this? How would you know if it wont get damaged or broken or even stolen?? I have never mailed anything this way before. It sounds quite risky and yes you are taking a chance with what you send.

WestMichiganGuy: That's the whole idea ... and why a lot of money isn't spent on the item. You get to see what makes it.

Don't send anything that's obviously breakable: i.e. glass, or that could potentially burst open in transit: i.e. potpourri.

revolutionoise: Good idea on where to scout a naked item to send.

moowee 02/ 2/2010 #

I go look at toys at thrift stores. There is an unlimited amount of items that could be sent.

Starwatcher 02/ 4/2010 #

So a stuffed animal could be sent without a box? Cool idea - I guess he might get dirty - but it would be fun to send!

AndreaJ 02/ 4/2010 #

I'm watching this currently. It sounds like a lot of fun. Starwatcher: I've never done this, but I was thinking stuffed animals might have a tendency to burst in transit.

I have done this a lot of times. I am a member of Nervousness.org they have alot of these swaps. I sent a record 78 to Austriaia. I wrote the addy with a sharpie!

hollycm6 02/12/2010 #

Ha ha! I am still a little scared to try this... only because they already think I'm a bit mad at my post office. :)

ladydy5 02/16/2010 #

I received a coconut from Hawaii. I''m going to try this. ;

ladydy5 02/18/2010 #

Please, no stuffed animals. Have no children or place to put it. Thanks

I found the most crazy thing at Goodwill tonight. It only cost me 50cents. I bet it costs a bunch more to mail.

I have always thought that the most crazy thing to send is a bowling ball but I have not wanted to invest that much in postage. Heavens - what would the mailperson do to deliver a bowling ball?

Hollycm6 - don't be afraid to try this swap. The folks at my postoffice love to see what I am sending next. I think that they enjoy my packages more than the rest of the dull mail they see all day.

Artistic 02/28/2010 #

Package is on the way to my partner. And the postal clerk got a chuckle out of it. :) Enjoy!
