Description:

Ramadan (the Muslim holy month) begins in just a couple of weeks. I haven't seen very many (actually none) swaps for Islamic holidays, so I thought it was about time that someone starts one. This will be for an Eid as-Fitr card for the end of Ramadan. You can either send a homemade or store-bought Eid card (if you can find one) or a postcard with Eid greetings, or if you wish a short note with two Ramadan/Eid themed ATCs to your partner. Please write Eid greetings to your partner in the card or postcard; do not leave them blank.

Edited--your greetings can be in your native language, especially if there is a traditional Eid greeting in your culture. If you choose to write in your native language, please include a translation of your message.

You do not have to be Muslim to participate in this swap (I'm not Muslim myself; I just have a healthy respect for Islam, and many many Muslim friends. Last year it was difficult to find Eid cards, so I ended up making my own). However, DO NOT participate in this swap if you plan to use it as a vessel for a message of hate toward anyone or any culture or religion. This is an opportunity to learn about another culture (if you're not Muslim) or celebrate your own (if you are). You can goggle traditional Eid greetings and use them for the message in handmade cards, postcards, ATCs, etc.

For more information about Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan, please visit this page: http://www.factmonster.com/spot/ramadan1.html

This swap is open to everyone since there is not a high dollar amount. (newbies please have a completed profile; those with ratings lower than 4.5 message me in advance) Also, it is international since you will only have one partner and shipping will be minimal. I am setting the swap date for one week before the end of Ramadan in the hopes that you will get your card to your partner by October 11 in time for Eid. There is a short turnaround time from the sign up to swap date (one week) so you can go ahead and get your card ready in advance so you can send it asap once you have your partner's name.

I will try to angel this swap so if you are hesitant to sign up due to the swap being open to everyone, don't be; you will receive a card one way or another.

My ex-husband was in the Air force and we were stationed in Incirlik, Turkey for 2 years (1975-1977). That was the 1st time I heard of Ramadan. Great experience however I would not want to go back. Good luck with your swap Leenda77 (^_^)

This looks like a lovely swap. I need to get some made for my neighbours. Daft question but what sort of message do you write in them? I don't wish to inadvertantly offend anyone

Stitchinwitch, if you google "Eid al-Fitr" cards, you can find some good examples of e-cards. I used the greetings from these cards for the insides of my cards last year. There are more secular ones and more religious ones; since you do not know the religion nor the level of religiousity of your partners, I'll probably go with the more secular greetings for this swap. But for my friends, I go with more religious greetings (just like you would for Christmas cards).

in Turkey, some words or sentences related to Ramadan month are hanged between the minarets of mosques and it is a common theme in eid cards. You can see what i mean in this picture:

http://www.serpek.com/wp-content/uploads/File/ramazan.jpg

I am thinking of drawing the top parts of two minarets and writing "Happy eid day" between them. In Turkey, Eid el fitr is also called as "eid of candies". So I will draw many many candies :) That's what i think, for now. Maybe i will come up with another idea. And i am also thinking of attaching something special for TURKISH eids.

Thanks for that. Hopefully it will inspire me for my friends too

hey! i think this is a great idea for a swap!!

i celebrate eid mubarak but we call it 'hari raya aidilfitri' here in singapore. it's celebrated after a month of fasting, which is basically to cleanse yourself and also to experience what it's like to not have food to eat.it teaches/trains you to be patient and to discipline yourself.(:

for the cards, what we usually write in malay is 'selamat hari raya, maaf zahir dan batin' which means 'have a happy eid and may all past wrongdoings be forgiven and forgotten'. but i guess anything relevant is fine too. :D

will definitely sign up for it and will get my friend, aish,to do the same.

thanks for organising this!

I edited this swap so that your Eid greetings can be in your traditional language if you'd like. Also, if this Eid is not called Eid al-Fitr in your country, and you'd like to share some information with your partner about the name/traditions of your Eid, please feel free to do so. I really hope this can be a cultural exchange and will foster understanding among many cultural groups.

Hye, like hudykamis, I celebrate Eid Mubarak in Malaysia. My favourite month is Ramadhan, we have to fast at day time. Eid mubarak is the day we celebrate our victory and our sacrifice of fasting during a month of Ramadhan.I definitely tell more about Ramadhan and Eid Mubarak to my partners!

OK so ever since my Arabic teacher was observing Ramadan during our class, I've been intrigued by the level of commitment it takes and finally, after 3 years, decided to do it myself. I'm Catholic, but I'm still observing the fast and praying and going to my own church. Soooo... obviously I can't NOT sign up for this swap, right? Right.

This is so interesting - I'm Jewish and just had Yom Kippur, which is also a fasting day, and to forgive and be forgiven of sin and wrongdoing. It always amazes me how much similarity there is between various religions. So why do religious groups oppress other religious groups and start wars? Sigghhhhh......

Partners have been assigned; sorry for the delay, but I am out of town at my sister's house and do not have very good internet access. But they are ready now. Thanks!
