Also, you say you recently discovered Mark Ryden's work - I love his stuff too. Have you seen Ray Caesar's work? He is one of my favorite contemporary artists in the lowbrow/pop surrealism sort of category. My other fave is Tara McPherson. Her work melts my face. You should check them out :)
