A young lady was waiting for a flight in the waiting area of a big airport. Knowing she would have to wait a long time to board, she decided to buy a couple of magazines to occupy herself. She also bought a bag of cookies. She sat down in a chair and pulled out her new magazine to read. Beside her chair where the bag of cookies lay, a man sat down in the seat next to her, opened his book and started reading. When she took out the first cookie, the man took one also. She felt irritated but said nothing. She just thought, "What nerve! If I was in the mood I'd tell him how rude he is!" For each cookie she took, the man took one too. When only one cookie remained, she thought, "Ah - What is this jerk going to do now?" Then the man, taking the last cookie, broke it in half and gave her one half. This was just too much! The woman got up, took her magazine and belongings and walked off in a huff. Later on, after boarding the plane, she sat down in her seat, she looked into her purse to get some chewing gum and to her surprise, she found her own bag of cookies, untouched and unopened! She felt so ashamed. She realized that she was wrong...she forgot that she had left her bag of cookies in her purse. The man had divided his cookies with her, without feeling angered or bitter...while she had been very angry, thinking that she was dividing her cookies with him. And now there was no chance to explain herself, or apologize. There are certain things we cannot recover...the stone after the throw, the word after it is said, the occasion after the loss, the time after it is gone.
