I guess I'll read Anya's ghost at some point, because it really reminds me of Persepolis, which I deeply love. Tbh, I'll add all of the books you've mentioned to my reading list, except the one you did not recommend. I feel we have a similar taste when it comes to books :)

I know many teenage girls and university students here in the UK who choose to wear the hijabi, and some who have made the decision to wear full veiling, so I'm aware that the situation and the decisions are much more nuanced and complex than the media portray.

Comment: Hi Shreela, My response to Virginia Woolf was exactly like yours when I first read her. I was confused and irritated. I started with 'Mrs Dalloway' and got really impatient because nothing happened. If I'm honest, I'm still not a great Woolf fan (like you I wanted to love her but didn't!). What did help me find a way in was a short story Woolf wrote called 'Kew Gardens'. There's a bit of comment on the story on the Kew Gardens website -- https://www.kew.org/read-and-watch/virginia-woolfs-kew-gardens Maybe try that story and see if it helps? I really enjoyed reading your review and found it perceptive and detailed. Thank you for sharing your response with me -- hopefully the next book you read was more enjoyable!

Comment: Thank you for the coins and bank note! I cannot believe how heavy the coins are! I understand why some would request not to get their change back in the coin form. Canadian money has a similar look as yours, but not nearly as heavy. I have yet to find another country that does the grooved edging on their coins though - like the US does for some of theirs. Thanks for sending and sending some history behind it!!

Comment: What an interesting letter and important volunteer commitment. Today as I left the drug store there was a woman giving out information about the SPCA. Unfortunately I was late to meet my cousin for lunch so I didn't stay and hear her presentation but I acknowledged how important the SPCA is. She was saying the SPCA is the voice for dogs and cats.

My husband does the vegetable garden and tills the flower garden for me. I had roses at one time, but I had awful luck with them and I pulled them out after they died! Yes, I am a sloppy gardener and I love flowers and enjoy watching them pop up and bloom! You know a lot about gardening and the names of many flowers; some I recognized and some I did not. No Starbucks? I usually drink tea because coffee has too much caffeine, but sometimes I drink it anyway. Starbucks' coffee can be pretty strong; some people like it that way. Do people add sugar to their chai tea? I do like "chai tea" from Starbucks. I think it's funny that "chai" means "tea", so actually people are saying "Tea tea". Here in the States, chai has a particular flavor. I got a recipe once to make chai tea - really good! Best of luck with your micro greens! Healthy eating! Happy swapping!

I also saw a tv show before wherein he was brought by time travellers to the future to see how people appreciate his paintings in present time, something that was denied of him during his lifetime. Comment: Shreela, I love your poetry zine, which arrived today! I especially like the hand-drawn illustrations. This is also a favorite poem of mine, so it was a special treat. I grew up with a 'woods' on our property; it was actually very small, but to a small child, it seemed huge. I went back after I had married and moved into my own home, and thought "wow! It seemed so much bigger in my memories!" If I could, I would take you to see the 'woods' in our area: I've been to the Hoosier National Forest, The Shawnee National Forest and many, many small woodland area. I love trees and there are so many beautiful ones to see. I really liked how you applied the words of the poem to your own situation; I too have 'miles to go' and 'promises to keep'. But one day there will be time to visit all those intriguing places! At least I hope so! Thank you for the beautiful Spring flowers card and the special zine! This was a great swap!!!

You know, there was a poem I once read, in a primary school textbook, in which the poet finds that the trees that used to seem giant to him as a child are no longer so... try as I may, I am not able to find that poem online!

Comment: I was so upset when I pulled out my mail and your picture was on top but blank on the back. I couldn’t figure out what Swap it belonged to. When I got home and sifted through the rest of the mail the back of your card was in there!!! I was super excited that both pieces had made it. Once I read your card, I understood your picture. We did end up staying in Paris for the New Year. We thought about going out, but decided to just stay warm at home instead. :) I must admit I had to look up what a shaker card is. They look like they could be really fun to make! I am interested in ATCs, but I've been too nervous to try one out. I'm also more interested in the hand drawn ones than the "stickers on a patterned card stock" ones I've seen online. Thanx again!

Comment: If that had been my first book of the genre, i don't think i would read another book from the same genre. You are always pushing your limits to read something i would never touch. Kudos on doing the challenge with a super challenging book.

In the US we have ModPodge that can be brushed on a collage and dries clear; maybe something similar available in India? Thanks for participating in the swap and hope you enjoyed it! I’m flattening it now, not sure where it will go. (After a chat with the postal clerks, I repackaged my stuff in a bigger envelope. It was not so thick so postage cost dropped in half.)

Comment: Thanks for the resend. Its interesting to hear about what they eat in other cultures because majority of the meals I've never heard of except maybe the ramen but I would never think of eating noodles for breakfast.

Comment: Wow, what a fantastic book! The kids and I were really impressed by your art, which was beautiful, and the story, which was very touching. There are a number of maternal and grandmotherly givers in stories around the world, aren't there? I had not heard of a rice paddy grandmother but she makes a lot of sense. There's a John Barleycorn in English folk songs that is a little similar except the story is more brutal. Anyway, thanks so much for a wonderful book.
Response: Thank you Tanya! I am flattered. I REALLY wanted to illustrate. This is the very basic style ... just pencil sketches of stuff. I wish I found an online course for illustrating - all such courses tend to be about 'Adobe Illustrator' !!

Response: Thanks for the heart :) Yes, sure you can braise it, essentially, you could simply let it simmer in the gravy more. You could bake it too ... but THAT would loosen the skin off the vegetable, right? If that is okay with you, go right ahead! Use a mild fish :)

Sounds like this was an interesting (but depressing) read. I possibly enjoyed your summary and thoughts more than I might have enjoyed the storied. Email might have been a better bet to space the answers out a little. Sounds like a fun read, even if the content was slightly dated politically/culturally. Glad you had a good time with it!

One book series that I love the office politics in is the "Thursday Next" series by Jasper Fforde -- imagine a book policing bureau with fictional characters as cops. Also vampire hunters, but I digress. I think I'd really like to find "Clueless & Co," -- the title sounds a little Bollywood, even :)

Your selection is fine for a woman and would have been fine for a man as well. They are beautiful! I love your Gandhi sketch and quote! I teach non-violent response in my work and have always loved his philosophy. I really like the paisley envelope, the texture and color is so rich and the design is very unique! I am a girl but even if I was a guy the envelope would have been appropriate. :) Thank you for being so thoughtful. If you need envelopes to play with let me know, I will send you some. I'm pretty sure, however that we don't have anything in the US that is as beautiful as the ones that you sent. <3
